OEM vs ODM for Kitchenware: Process, Tooling, Order Flow
Definitions that actually matter commercially
OEM: we manufacture an existing (stock-mold) product with your branding, colors and packaging. ODM: we develop your design — from sketch or 3D file to new tooling. The commercial difference is tooling investment and order volume, so the real decision is: does the market deserve a custom shape, or does a stock shape with your branding sell equally?
The OEM path (stock mold + your brand)
| Step | What happens | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Select + sample | Free stock sample, courier paid by buyer | 3–5 days |
| 2. Branding decision | Laser logo, molded deboss, sleeve or colour box | Artwork 2–3 days |
| 3. Pilot order | First article to test the market | 15–20 days |
| 4. Scale | Reorder with confirmed QA reports | 15–20 days |
The ODM path (custom design + new tooling)
| Step | What happens | Typical time / cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1. 3D file | We model from sketch/sample, or accept STEP/STL | 3–7 days, free |
| 2. DFM review | Draft angle, wall thickness, ejection review | 2–3 days |
| 3. Tooling | Single-cavity gadget mold, quoted after DFM | 25–30 days |
| 4. T1 samples | First shots; 1–2 revision rounds normal | 7–10 days |
| 5. Mass production | Full run after T1 approval | 20–30 days |
Tooling ownership — get it in writing
If you pay for tooling, the PO should state: buyer owns the mold; factory stores, maintains and insures it; molds ship out within X days on request; free re-run if the mold produces under N shots in 24 months. Factories that resist this sentence are telling you something.
Which to choose
New brand or untested SKU: OEM pilot. Proven SKU with volume and differentiation needs: ODM. Many of our longest client relationships started OEM and converted their best seller to ODM in year two — the data paid for the mold.
Frequently asked questions
How long does kitchen gadget tooling take?
A single-cavity die-cast mold for a hand tool takes 25–30 days to build. Multi-cavity or family molds take longer; the tooling budget depends on size and complexity and is quoted after DFM review.
Can I start with a small trial order?
Yes, on stock molds — a first article is the standard way to open a private-label program, and it is quoted before you commit to a production volume.
Do you sign NDAs for custom designs?
Yes, before receiving files.
